Iowa State adds Wisconsin Combo

Friday, 15 June 2012 04:33 Written by Van Coleman

Fred Hoiberg and his Iowa State staff went a long way to filling their backcourt needs in the Class ofISU_Cyclones 2013 with the addition of a Wisconsin combo guard...

XOFan caught up with 6-foot-4 Matt Thomas, a combo guard from Onalaska High in Wisconsin today, and he told us he just committed to Iowa State to play for head coach Fred Hoiberg.

"I'm headed to Iowa State, because of the way they recruited me from Day One," Thomas told XOFan. "I really like the fact that I have a great relationship with Coach Hoiberg and Coach Otz!

"I think I fit into their offense, and my game is structured to be successful in the things they do on the court," Thomas continued. "I want to play right away and they lose five players following the 2012-13 season, so the opportunity to play as a freshman is very good."

"Plus it's only 3 1/2 hours away from my home so my mom and family can see me play!"

He chose Iowa State over Virginia.

Matt is a big-time shooter who can stroke it similar to his future head coach and has the ball skills to play either guard spot for the Cyclones. His high school coach Coach Kowal told us that the Cyclones are getting a true competitor.

Matt is one of the toughest competitor's I've ever seen at the high school level," Onalaska Head Coach Craig Kowal told XOFan. " He is a winner who does what it takes to make others around him better, and help lift his team to the win."

"He is one of the hardest workers I've have ever seen and his type of leadership will be infecious with his future teammates. He is going to do whatever it takes to not only play, but to be part of the winning program that Fred is building at Iowa State."

It looks like Matt Thomas is going to give Cyclone fans a reason to get excited for years to come, and just the first piece of what looks to be a quality Class of 2013!
